Goal Setting

The discharge nurse followed the script and asked a series of questions. This included questions about the home, the type of home, who lived in the home, if it had stairs, etc.

Then, she came to the last question.

“What will your goal be when you leave the hospital?"

She proceeded with some examples.

·       To not return to the hospital.

·       To return to the level of health you had before coming into the hospital.

·       To improve your level of health.

I stood by, ready to help if the question was not heard or understood.

Then, my dad began to answer.

First, he contorted a confused look on his face.

Next, he made that familiar Italian sound.

“Eh.”

He continued.

“It’s whatever is God’s will.”

The nurse looked down at her paper and seemed unsure how to proceed.

I sensed that she wanted to rephrase or change his answer.

I asked if she ever got that answer before.

With a look of both surprise and delight, she said it was a first.

“Be sure to write it down,” I said with a smile.

And, she did.

Wow . . .

“What’s your goal?”

Here’s to more WOW Moments!
