What Do You Want?

Sitting in church, watching the youth choir file in, I wondered about the songs they would sing and how they would sound. I also reflected on the fond memories of my own children being in the children’s choir many years ago.

When it was time for the Responsorial Psalm, a young girl, maybe 12 years old, wearing a white headband to hold back her thick dark hair, sang out so beautifully and with such confidence.

She sang, “The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.” Psalm 23

Then she raised her arms inviting the congregation to echo back that verse.

I too sang it with confidence, keeping my eyes on that young girl.

For a moment I thought of myself as that young girl, pondering my life then and now and the mystery of time.

She continued singing Psalm 23 that includes verses about how the Lord:

  • Guides us

  • Refreshes our soul

  • Gives us courage

I wondered if she understood the meaning and the power of the words she was singing.

I wondered if I did.

When she got to a certain line, I was reminded of the Coffee Talks I used to lead where, through various activities, we remembered that…

  • Our cup overflows

I believe that when we take the time to put things in perspective and to be present in our lives, we come to realize we have everything that we need and our “wants” tend to matter less and sometimes fade away.

We are each called to follow the Good Shepherd.

He loves us very much and has a good plan for our lives.

He laid down His life for us, rose from the dead and is always ready to forgive us.

That’s the good news.

It’s the best.

Once you have the best, what else is there?

Wow . . .

“There is nothing.”

Here’s to more WOW Moments!
